In Ottawa, you can plant flowers, herbs, and even vegetables on a narrow strip of land between the sidewalk and the road — no permit required!
The city has updated its rules:
- you can plant edible plants,
- use pots and flower beds,
- replace the lawn with other green plants.
Important: plants should not be taller than 1 meter and you cannot use stones, tiles, or concrete.
The city recommends planting native flowers and herbs that bees and butterflies love.
You can also make a “rain garden” that helps absorb water after rain.
Do not plant dangerous or poisonous plants, such as hogweed.
