Canada did not join mass walkout during Netanyahu’s UN speech
Canada did not take part in the mass walkout of delegations during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s address to the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
While dozens of diplomats from various countries left the chamber in protest, Canada’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Bob Rae, remained in his seat. His office confirmed that the Canadian delegation did not join the demonstration, which drew widespread international attention.
Witnesses reported that the Assembly president had to call for order several times as delegates—mostly from developing nations—stood up and left during Netanyahu’s remarks.
In his speech, Netanyahu sharply criticized the decision of several countries, including Canada, to recognize Palestine as an independent state. He called it a “disgraceful decision” that, in his view, encourages terrorism and undermines the security of the Jewish people.
The Prime Minister also focused on the plight of Israeli hostages held by Hamas for nearly two years, as well as threats coming from Iran. His remarks were interrupted at least once by someone in the audience.
Meanwhile, Israel continues to face harsh international criticism over its bombardment of Gaza, the humanitarian crisis, and civilian deaths. A recent attack on Hamas negotiators in Qatar has further fueled condemnation and heightened tensions surrounding the Middle East conflict.
