Strong winds expected in Ottawa: gusts up to 90 km/h Friday afternoon

Environment Canada has issued a warning for strong winds in Ottawa, with gusts expected to reach 70 to 90 km/h on Friday afternoon, January 9. According to forecasters, morning showers could “generate” powerful winds, followed by the passage of a cold front expected late in the afternoon or early evening.

Meteorologists say the front may bring a sudden increase in wind strength and a rapid shift to westerly winds, with brief peak gusts approaching 90 km/h in some areas. Residents are advised to secure or bring indoors any items that could be blown away, including garbage bins, outdoor furniture, and seasonal decorations. Localized power outages and falling branches are also possible, prompting caution for both drivers and pedestrians.

Winds are expected to gradually ease overnight as the cold front moves through the region. Amid unusually mild conditions — with a forecast high near +7°C, well above the seasonal average — the National Capital Commission has temporarily closed the Rideau Canal Skateway to help preserve the ice during the warm spell and precipitation.
