Trump Suggests He May Have Been the Target of the Shooter at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner

In Washington, the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was abruptly interrupted after reports of gunfire near the Washington Hilton, where President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, Vice President J.D. Vance, cabinet members, journalists, and invited guests were present. Trump was not injured, and senior attendees were quickly evacuated. According to media reports citing law enforcement sources, the suspect was identified as 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California; he is alive and has been taken into custody.

The motive for the attack has not yet been officially established. Speaking later at the White House, Trump said that, according to preliminary information, the suspect may have acted alone. When asked whether he believed he was the main target, the president replied, “I guess,” adding that “when you make an impact, they come after you.”

According to Trump, one law enforcement officer was injured, but his bulletproof vest saved him. The president thanked the Secret Service and police for their quick response, calling their actions decisive and professional. He also admitted that at first he thought the loud noise was a dropped tray, because the shooter was far from the hall.

The dinner, which is usually seen as a symbolic evening bringing together power, the press, and political Washington, was cancelled. Trump said the event would be held again within the next 30 days — “better” and “safer.” The investigation is continuing by federal and local law enforcement agencies.
