Carney Announces Second Package of Major Projects to Accelerate Canada’s Development

Prime Minister Mark Carney has unveiled the second group of “nation-building projects” that will be fast-tracked through the Major Projects Office (MPO).

The list includes new mining projects in New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario, an LNG project and transmission line in British Columbia, and a hydroelectric project in Nunavut.

Carney said each project is “transformational on its own,” but their impact will grow as part of broader national strategies to strengthen Canada’s competitiveness and advance its position as an energy superpower.

The MPO, created under the Building Canada Act (Bill C-5), aims to cut project approval times from five years to two and provide easier access to federal funding.

Critical minerals
Sisson Mine — tungsten (N.B.)
Nouveau Monde Graphite — open-pit graphite mine and battery material plant in Quebec (over 1,000 jobs)

LNG and energy
Canada continues to support LNG development in B.C. Ksi Lisims LNG includes a gas pipeline, transmission line and floating terminal producing 12 million tonnes per year.

Energy projects include the Iqaluit Nukkiksautiit hydro project (15–30 MW) to replace diesel power in Nunavut and a new 500 kV transmission line from Prince George to Terrace, set to be completed by 2032.

The first package, announced in September, included LNG Canada Phase 2, the new Darlington nuclear project, the Port of Montreal expansion, and several mining initiatives.
