Ottawa Recovers from Second August Storm

Cleanup continues in Ottawa after a powerful thunderstorm struck the city late on August 12. It was the National Capital Region’s second major weather event of the month.

Wind gusts reached 107 km/h—considerably stronger than those recorded during the July 1 storm. Heavy rain, lightning and damaging winds brought down trees, damaged power lines and disrupted traffic. Nepean, Merivale, Parkwood Hills and Manordale were among the hardest-hit areas.

At the height of the storm, approximately 28,000 Hydro Ottawa customers lost power. By the following afternoon, service had been restored to more than 20,000 customers, although repairs to some local lines required additional time.

Municipal crews continue to collect fallen branches and property damaged during the August storms. Residents should call 3-1-1 to request collection of large tree debris or report basement flooding.
